Brit of the Week

Kyle Edmund dropped down to ITF level on his comeback from injury. Looking for some wins which to date had been elusive. The Brit was unseeded at the event in Italy. In the first round Edmund was against Alejo Lorenzo Lingua Lavallen. The first set was very close as both players fought to get ahead. Eventually, a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker the Brit edged ahead and took the lead. The second set was much easier as Edmund dominated to book a spot in the next round 7-6(5), 6-1.

The second round saw Edmund against eighth seed Mathys Erhard. The Frenchman and the Brit went toe to toe in the first set, forcing a tiebreak. Once again, the Brit edged through and took the lead. The second set saw Erhard break Edmund early and level up the match. The final set saw Edmund once again dominate and take the win 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1.

In the quarter-final Edmund was against qualifier Pietro Marino. The Italian had defeated the top seed in the previous round, so couldn’t be taken for granted. The Brit dominated the first set as the Italian was unable to get to grips with the Brit. The second set saw Marino re-group and fight hard. It looked like the set would go to a tiebreak, but the Italian managed to break Edmund right at the end to level up the match. The final set saw the Italian break the Brit early in the set, and unfortunately, Edmund was unable to break back. Marino moved on into the semi-final 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
