Brit of the Week

Jack Draper entered the Challenger in Bergamo and was the top seed. In the first round Draper drew alternate Francesco Maestrelli. The seed and Italian stayed toe to toe at the start of the set before the Brit secured the break of seed and took the lead. The second set followed more of the same. Eventually, Draper broke again and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The second round saw Draper against another Italian, Andrea Vavassori. The Brit broke early in the first set and took the lead. The second set was closer, as Vavassori tried to fight back. However, no matter what the Italian tried, he was unable to get anything on the Draper serve. The Brit secured his own break of serve and moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.

In the quarter-final Draper was against fellow Brit Billy Harris. The first set saw the top seed dominate as Harris was unable to prevent Draper from breaking serve to move ahead. The second set was a little closer, as Harris started to find his game. Ultimately, though, it was Draper who secured the break of serve and moved into the next round 6-2, 6-3.

The semi-final saw the top seed against American Brandon Nakashima. The Brit dominated the first set as Nakashima struggled to stay with Draper. The second set saw the American re-group and break Draper to level up the match. The final set was very close as both players went toe to toe. Just as it looked to be heading to a tiebreak, the Brit broke through and moved into the final 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

In the final, the Brit was against fifth seed David Goffin. The Belgian got the jump on the top seed and dominated to take the lead. Draper re-grouped in the second and managed to force a tiebreak, which the Brit won to level up the match. The final set went to and fro, with breaks coming regularly. However, eventually, Draper secured the vital break of serve and lifted the title 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
