Brit of the Week

Oliver Crawford entered the ITF event in India and was the second seed. In the first round the Brit was against Australian qualifier Kody Pearson. As is usually the way, the qualifier proved to be dangerous. Pearson broke serve in the first set and took the lead. The second set saw the seed re-group and play better. Crawford forced a tiebreak, which he went on to dominate and level up the match. The final set was a tight affair again and looked to be heading to a tiebreak again. However, the seed managed to break serve and move into the next round 4-5, 7-6(2), 7-5.

The second round Crawford was against Sidharth Rawat. The Indian struggled in the first set, as the Brit broke serve early to take the lead. The second set, though, was much closer. Rawat stayed with the seed and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker, Crawford edged through and into the next round 6-3, 7-6(4).

In the quarter-final the Brit was against sixth seed Aryan Shah. The Indian managed to stay with the second seed at the start, but Crawford soon had the break and took the lead. The second set was dominated by Crawford. No matter what Shah tried, he just could not stay with the pace of the Brit. Crawford moved into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.

The semi-final saw the Brit against unseeded Japanese player Ryuki Matsuda. Crawford and the Japanese stayed close in the first set. However, eventually, the seed managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set followed much the same pattern, as Crawford broke serve and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-4.

In the final Crawford was against top seed and fellow Brit Jay Clarke. The top seed was struggling from the outset and Crawford took full advantage, going out to a 4-0 lead. Clarke did manage to pull a couple of games back, but unfortunately, had to retire from the match. This handed the title to Crawford 5-2(RET).
