Brit of the Week

Jay Clarke entered the ITF event in Italy and was the fourth seed. In the first round the Brit was against Kirill Kivattsev. The Russian stayed with the Brit in the first set and looked to be forcing a tiebreak. However, right at the end of the set Clarke broke to take the lead. The second set was much easier for the seed who broke early. Kivattsev was unable to get back in to the match and the Brit moved into the next round 7-5, 6-4.

In the second round the Brit was against Italian Lorenzo Ferri. The Wildcard had the crowd on his side, but was still unable to stop the seed from breaking and taking the first set. The second set was easier for Clarke, as the Brit dominated and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-2.

The quarter-final saw Clarke against American fifth seed Omni Kumar. The Brit dominated from the outset, breaking at will. The fourth seed eased through the first set as Kumar could not get back into the set. The second set was more of the same, with Clarke dominating. Unfortunately, the American was unable to continue and had to withdraw. This handed the win to Clarke 6-1, 3-0 (RET).

In the semi-final the Brit was against unseeded player Juan Bautista Otegui. The Argentine stayed with Clarke at the start, before the seed broke serve and took the lead. The second set was even easier for Clarke, as he dominated the Argentine and eased through into the final 6-3, 6-1.

The final pitched Clarke against seventh seed Carlos Sanchez Jover. The Spaniard went toe to toe with the Brit in the first set and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker Clarke edged through and took the first set. The second set saw Sanchez Jover re-group and break serve to level up the match. The final set was fairly close. However, Clarke managed to get the vital break of serve to lift the trophy 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4.
