Brit of the Week
Jan Choinski entered qualifying of the ATP Challenger event in Campinas. The Brit came through qualifying and into the main draw. In the first round Choinski drew Chilean Gonzalo Lama. The first set started close as both Choinski and Lama held their nerve and serve. Eventually the Brit broker through and took the lead. This seemed to break the spirit of the Chilean as the Brit dominated the second set and eased into the next round 6-3, 6-1.
The second round saw the Brit against Argentine Juan Bautista Torres. Choinski had little trouble with Torres as the Brit broke seemingly at will. Choinski dominated the match from the outset and soon had everything under control. Losing only three games the Brit moved into the quarter-final in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
In the quarter-final Choinski was against the seventh seed Alexandre Muller. The Brit totally dominated the first set, as the Frenchman struggled to get into the match. However, Muller re-grouped in the second set and dominated Choinski to level up the match. In the final set, both players fought hard and eventually it was the Brit that secured the vital break of serve to move into the next round 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.
The semi-final saw the Brit against Remy Bertola. The lucky loser from Switzerland had knocked out the top seed in the first round, following this up with defeating the eighth seed in the quarter-final. Choinski though, was not put off. Although the Swiss fought hard, it was the Brit who secured the break of serve in both sets to move into the final 6-4, 6-4.
In the final the Brit was against the second seed Juan Pablo Varillas. The Peruvian had not lost a set en route to the final, so was the obvious favourite. Varillas did get the early break in both sets, however Choinski was not put off. The qualifier broke back, and then broke again in both sets to seal the match and claim his first ATP Challenger tour title in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Honourable Mention
Katie Swan entered the ITF event in Trnava and was the third seed. In the first round Swan drew fellow Brit and qualifier Freya Christie. Swan and Christie stayed close at the start of each set, but the seed showed her experience and ranking by breaking to move into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
The second round saw the Brit against another qualifier, this time Serbian Lola Radivojevic. Swan dominated the match from the outset. Radivojevic was unable to get into the match, and the Brit was easing through without much trouble. Swan moved into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
In the quarter-final Swan was against another Brit Maia Lumsden. Once again the seed dominated from the start of the match. Swan only lost three games in total as she went about the match as though she had left the oven on. The third seed was soon in the semi-final with a straight set win 6-2, 6-1.
The semi-final saw the Brit against the second seed Vitalia Diatchenko. The first set was close, as the seeds stayed toe to toe. Eventually though, Swan secured the break of serve and moved into the lead. This dented Diatchenko as the second seed struggled to hold serve. The Brit once again dominated and moved into the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
In the final Swan was against the top seed Wang Xinyu. The Chinese player found the Brit way too strong in the first set, as the third seed dominated and took the lead. The Chinese fought back in the second set, breaking the serve of Swan to level up the match. In the final set, with both players fighting for the win, it was Swan who again broke serve and took the title 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
