Brit of the Week

Jan Choinksi entered the ATP Challenger event in Austria and was unseeded. The Brit drew the top seed Vit Kopriva in the first round. The Czech player dominated the first set, as the Brit struggled to get into the match. Kopriva soon had the first set in the bag. Choinski re-grouped in the second set and managed to break serve of Kopriva to level up the match. The final set was very close. However, eventually, Choinski managed to break the serve of the top seed to seal the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The second round saw Choinski against Marvin Moeller. The German tried to stay with the Brit, and at first managed to do so forcing a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit dominated and took the lead. The second set was more of the same with Moeller once again forcing a tiebreak. This time the German edged through and levelled up the match. The final set looked to be heading the same way, but the Brit managed to break serve right at the end and take the match 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 7-5.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against qualifier Max Rehberg. The German was no match for Choinski who dominated from the outset. The unseeded Brit barely put a foot wrong as Rehberg struggled to keep pace. Choinski took the match quickly, dropping only two games to move into the next round 6-1, 6-1.

The semi-final saw Choinksi against Jakub Nicod. The Czech player stayed with the Brit at the start of the first set. Eventually, the Brit broke serve and took the lead. The second set was more of the same, as Nicod tried to get back in the match. Once again, the Brit broke serve and booked a spot in the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the final Choinski was against Lukas Neumayer. The Austrian had the crowd behind him as he tried to break serve. The Brit managed to break serve though and soon had the lead. The second set was more comfortable for the Brit, who dominated and lifted the title in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

Honourable Mention

James Story came through qualifying in the ITF event in Monastir and made the main draw. In the first round the Brit was against the fifth seed Aziz Ouakaa. The Tunisian stayed with Story in the first set and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit dominated and took the lead. The second set saw the qualifier break the serve of the seed and move into the next round in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-3.

The second round saw the Brit against Nazim Makhlouf. The Algerian broke the serve of Story towards the end of the first set and took the lead. Story re-grouped in the second set, and secured the break of serve needed to level up the match. The Brit dominated the final set and moved into the next round 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against fellow qualifier Nino Ehrenschneider. The German stayed with Story in the first set and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker, Ehrenschneider couldn’t stop the Brit from easing through to take the lead. The second set, though, saw the German dominate and level up the match. The final set saw Story break early in the set and move into the next round 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3.

The semi-final saw the Brit against sixth seed Jack Loge. The Belgian battled hard with Story in the first set. Eventually, the Brit broke serve and moved into the lead. The second set saw the seed fight back. The Belgian managed to secure a break of serve right at the end of the set to level the match. The final set was close, but eventually, Story broke serve and moved into the final 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

In the final the Brit was against seventh seed Samir Hamza Reguig. The Algerian battled hard in the first set and forced a tiebreak, which Reguig edged through. Story re-grouped in the second set and broke serve to level up the match. The final set saw both playing well. However, eventually, Story broke serve once again and lifted the title 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4.
