Brit of the Week

Charles Broom entered the ITF event in Heraklion and was the top seed in both the singles and the doubles. In the first round of the singles the Brit was against American qualifier Liam Oliver. Broom & Oliver stayed toe to toe at the start of the first set, before the top seed managed to break and take the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate and move into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the second round Broom was against Wong Hong-Kit. The player from Hong Kong was no match for the top seed. The Brit dominated both sets. The player from Hong Kong struggled to hold serve, and Broom was soon easing through to the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The quarter-final saw Broom against Australian Matthew Dellavedova. The first set saw the top seed secure an early break of serve and move into the lead. The second set Dellavedova was totally outclassed as the Brit dominated from the start. Broom secured a spot in the semi-final in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.

In the semi-final Broom was against Japanese player Shinji Hazawa. The Japanese got the jump on the Brit in the first set, breaking serve to take the lead. The second set saw the top seed fight back and get an early break of serve to level up the match. The final set was a tense affair, and both players stayed toe to toe. Eventually a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker Broom edged through to book a spot in the final 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).

The final saw Broom against second seed Australian Omar Jasika. The first set was very close, with both players fighting to break serve. The Australian secured the break right at the end of the set and had the lead. The second set saw Jasika break again and lift the title in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

In the doubles Broom partnered up with Julian Cash. Their first round opponents were another all British team of Louis Allen & Max Benaim. The top seeds managed to get the break of serve in the first set and took the lead. The second set was much the same, but the break took a little longer to obtain. The top seeds moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.

The quarter-final saw Broom & Cash against Romain Faucon & Ainius Sabaliauskas. The Belgian/Lithuanian pair stayed close to the top seeds in the first set. Eventually, though, Broom & Cash secured the break of serve needed to take the lead. The second set was much the same as Faucon & Sabaliauskas ust could not break the serve of the top seeds. Broom & Cash moved into the semi-final 6-4, 6-4.

In semi-final the Brits were against Japanese pair Hazawa & Shuichi Sekiguchi. Just like in the singles Hazawa & Sekiguchi got off to the better start and broke Broom & Cash to take the lead. The second set saw the Brits break the Japanese pair and levelled up the match. In the final match tiebreak the Brits edged ahead and moved into the final 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

The final the top seeds were against fourth Mark Whitehouse & Gabriele Bosio. The Brit/Italian pair stayed toe to toe with Broom & Cash in the first set. The top seeds secured the break of serve right at the end to take the lead. The second set saw the Brits once again break serve and lift the trophy in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
