Brit of the Week

Charles Broom entered qualifying of the ATP challenger event in Nonthaburi and was the top qualifying seed. The Brit came through in straight sets and made the main draw. In the first round the Brit was against fellow qualifier Tristan Schoolkate. The Australian went toe to toe with the Brit in the first set, and looked to be forcing a tiebreak. However, Broom had other ideas and managed to secure the vital break of serve right at the end of the set. The second set was much closer and both Schoolkate and Broom couldn’t get the break. In the ensuing tiebreak it was the Brit who took the lead and booked a spot in the second round 7-5, 7-6.

The second round saw Broom against Ben Patael. The Israeli qualifier had taken out the second seed in the previous round. The Israeli got the jump on the Brit and broke serve to take the lead. In the second set Broom re-grouped and broke Patael to level up the match. The final set saw both players go toe to toe and a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker it was again the Brit who got the lead and booked a spot in the next round 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

In the quarter-final Broom was against Australian Omar Jasika. The first set was dominated by the Australian as Broom struggled to hold serve. In the second set the situation was reversed, as the Brit dominated the set and levelled up the match. In the final set Jasika broke the Brit serve and took the match 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

Honourable Mention

Jay Clarke entered the ATP Challenger in Mallorca and was unseeded. In the first round the Brit drew the fifth seed Gregoire Barrere. The Frenchman dominated the first set, as Clarke struggled on serve. However, the second set saw Clarke stay with Barrere and force a tiebreak, which the Brit won to level the match. In the final set the Brit and Frenchman were tied when Barrere was forced to retire with the score at 1-6, 7-6, 1-1 (RET).

The second round saw the Brit against Antoine Bellier. The Swiss stayed with Clarke at the start of the set, before the Brit secured the break of serve and took the lead. The second set was more of the same as Clarke again managed to break serve and book a spot in the next round 6-4, 6-4.

In the quarter-final Clarke was against the fourth seed Zizou Berges. The Belgian managed to break the serve of Clarke in the first set and took the lead. The second set saw the Belgian dominate the Brit who was unable to get back into the match. Berges took the match 6-3, 6-2.
