Brit of the Week
Jodie Burrage entered the ITF W60 event in France and was the fourth seed. In the first round the Brit was against unseeded Yuliya Hatouka. The Brit and Hatouka stayed toe to toe at the start of the first set, before eventually Burrage got the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate and move quickly into the next round 7-5, 6-1.
In the second round Burrage was against Vitalia Diatchenko. The first set saw the seed and Diatchenko stay close at the start, however, Burrage managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate just like in the first round. The seed moved into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The quarter-final saw Burrage against Belgian Greet Minnen. The Brit found the Belgian too strong in the first set, as Minnen got the better start and broke serve to take the lead. Burrage re-grouped in the second set and stayed toe to toe with the Belgian. Just when it looked like a tiebreak would be in the offing, the Brit broke serve and levelled up the match. The final set was also close. Burrage managed to break serve though, and took the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In the semi-final Burrage was against Yanina Wickmayer. The Belgian stayed toe to toe in the first set, and managed to break serve just before a tiebreak looked inevitable. The seed re-grouped in the second set and managed to break serve to level up the match. The final set was total fairly close, but it was Burrage who secured the break to book a spot in the final 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The final saw the Brit against the top seed Italian Lucia Bronzetti. The Italian got off to the better start, and broke the Burrage serve to take the lead. The fourth seed re-grouped in the second set and fought hard to pull level. Which Burrage achieved. The final set saw Burrage dominate from the off, and the Brit claimed the title 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
