- Blu Baker claims ITF title
- Brit was fifth seed
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA, USA – Blu Baker entered the ITF event and was the fifth seed. The Brit defeated the second seed en route.
Brit of the Week
Blu Baker entered the ITF event in Florida and was the fifth seed. The Brit drew qualifier Federico Boscarino in the first round. The Argentine stayed with the Brit at the start of the first set. Baker secured the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw Baker dominate the Argentine, who was unable to hold serve. The fifth seed progressed into the second round in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
In the second round Baker was against Yannik Rahman. The American junior surprised the Brit and broke serve in the first set to take the lead. The fifth seed re-grouped in the second set and dominated Rahman, who was now struggling to get anything on the Brit’s game. Baker levelled up to take the match to the distance. The Brit was now in control, and broke early to seal the win and move into the next round 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The quarter-final saw the Brit against Axel Nefve. The American had defeated the third seed in the previous round, but Baker was not in the mood for failure. The fifth seed dominated the match from the start. Nefve struggled to get into the match, whilst Baker was cruising through to the next round 6-2, 6-2.
In the semi-final Baker was against the second seed Roberto Cid Subervi. The Dominican should have been the favourite for this match up, but the Brit had not read the script. Baker dominated the second seed right from the outset. No matter what Cid Subervi tried he was unable to get anything onto the game of the Brit. Baker moved into the final 6-1, 6-2.
The final saw the seed against unseeded Swede Arvid Nordquist. The first set was very close, as both went toe to toe. Eventually, a tiebreak ensued which the Brit eased through and took the lead. The second set saw Baker dominate and the Swede was unable to stay with him. Baker lifted the title in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2.
