Brit of the Week
Jodie Burrage entered the ITF event in Bolton in both the singles and the doubles. Coming through qualifying in the singles the Brit drew Linnea Malmqvist in the first round. The Swede had very little to trouble Burrage with in the first set. The second saw Malmqvist fight back and break serve to level up. However, the Brit fought back in the final set, once again dominating to take the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
In the second round the Brit was drawn against the third seed Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian however could not handle Burrage, who continued the superb tennis played so far. Completing dominating the Russian, the Brit only dropped one game in the entire match. Burrage moved into the next round 6-0, 6-1.
The quarter-final pitted Burrage against the seventh seed Isabella Shinikova. Once again the Brit dominated, the Bulgarian was completely outclassed and only managed to win one game. The Brit was on a roll and moved smoothly into the semi-final 6-1, 6-0.
In the semi-final Burrage faced fellow Brit Emma Raducanu. Both unseeded Brits fought hard, with Raducanu taking the lead after breaking Burrage in the first set. Burrage re-grouped in the second and once again dominated to level up. The final set was a very close affair, but it was Burrage that secured the vital break of serve to move into the final 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The final saw the Brit against the top seed Vitalia Diatchenko. The Russian had not dropped a set en route to the final. Burrage tried everything to get something on the Diatchenko serve, unfortunately it was the Russian who dominated, once again not dropping a set as she defeated Burrage 6-2, 6-2.
Burrage teamed up with Alicia Barnett for the doubles. The Brits were drawn against Shinikova & Julia Terzijska. The Bulgarians were dominated by the Brits who more or less broke at will. No matter what Shinikova & Terzijska tried the Brits had the answer for. It was Burrage & Barnett that moved into the quarter-final 6-0, 6-2.
In the quarter-final the Brits were against the fourth seeds Jessika Ponchet & Nina Stojanović. The French/Serbian pair were broken by Burrage & Barnett in the first set, and the Brits held on to take the lead. The seeds however, fought back in the second set, dominating the Brits and levelled up. The ensuing match tiebreak proved to be a close affair, before the Brits edged into the lead. Burrage & Barnett booked their place in the semi-final 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
The semi-final saw the Brits face the American pairing of Robin Anderson & Maegan Manasse. Burrage & Barnett took control in the first set, breaking the Americans to take the lead. The second set saw the Brits dominate the Americans with little trouble, booking the spot in the final 6-3, 6-2.
In the final the Brits were against Laura-Ioana Andrei & Helene Scholsen. The Romanian/Belgian pairing tried to keep pace with Burrage & Barnett but the Brits were too strong. Claiming the vital break of serve in both sets the Brits stormed to the victory and lifted the trophy 6-3, 6-3. Overall a very good week for Burrage in Bolton.
