Preview: Andy Murray v Federico Gaio | H2H: First Meeting

In the second week of Challenger competition in Biella, the strength of field goes up quite a notch and last week’s top seeded wildcard Andy Murray does not even get a seeding this week. He will face Italy’s Federico Gaio in the opening round. Gaio was also in last week’s competition and looked impressive in the early rounds before he too was despatched with ease by the eventual champion Illya Marchenko.

In fact, Gaio had a lot easier time of things than Murray, who found himself up against it in his first match of the season, having to come from behind in his opener.

Murray will have had time to get used to how the courts are playing, and more importantly will have got matches under his belt, given that he only played seven tour-level events last year.

Apart from a smattering of tour level events at the start of last year, Gaio spent most of the comeback in 2020 on the Challenger circuit and typically favours clay and lists his favourite shot as a volley, so we can expect more tests of Murray’s movement if Gaio tries to come in to finish his points off at the net.

In general Murray’s movement looked good and he got to have several days of continuous play, and more importantly a couple of days off before he goes again.

Prediction: Murray in three sets.
