Danielle Collins faces the only Aussie left in the draw, the wild card Destanee Aiava, to book a place in the third round. She has been a finalist at Melbourne in 2022 where she lost to the home favourite Ashleigh Barty. Since then, she has failed to make it past the first round of all the grand slams she has played.

Aiava is the only Australian woman left in the singles main draw. She beat the Belgian Greet Minnen in the first-round, and remarkably turned around the game being a set and 5-2 down in the second set, before winning an extraordinary final set tiebreak.

With all eyes on Aiava, she will gather a lot of crowd support while facing a former runner-up. Collins’s aggressive game from the baseline will be significant in this contest along with her powerful groundstrokes. Collins should be undeterred by the home crowd and should prevail in three tight sets against a highly motivated opponent.

Prediction: Collins in three sets.

Holger Rune will look to inch closer to the second week as he eyes a place in third round in the draw. He has never made past the first week on hard courts at grand slams. He has suffered three first round losses last year at Brisbane, US Open and Hangzhou. His won his first-round match against the Zhizhen Zhang as he competed in his first ever five set match in Australia.

Matteo Berrettini dropped the first set he played in the tournament but proved too strong for the Brit Cameron Norrie, widely dominating the last two sets. He served 32 aces and served big on his way to the second round, without dropping a game.

The Italian is playing a strong game towards making his way back to the top. His huge and pin-pointing serve and slice backhand are the strong weapons that the Danish will face, with his defensive play and swift footwork. It will be an engaging game for the crowd at the John Cain Arena which is expected to go the way of the former Wimbledon finalist.

Prediction: Berrettini in four sets.

The US Open quarter-finalist, Beatriz Haddad Maia will face Erika Andreeva with the winner advancing to the third round of the Australian Open. She registered her first win of her in the first-round against the Argentine Julia Riera in a hard-fought game as the latter secured the first set, but could not continue the same in the second, getting broken by the 15th seed in the penultimate game of the set.

Andreeva is the rising star of WTA and her game is marked by versatility and maturity. The tournament is the first time that she has managed to get into the main draw, and her recent performances show that she is pacing up the rankings steadily. Her first-round against Saisai Zheng started off on an easy note, while the second was stretched to a tie-break, where her first serve percentage was 38% and she made 26 winners against 21 unforced errors.

The second meeting between them will be a display of strong serving from the Brazilian and a controlled and solid baseline game from her opponent. The latter looks strong to win the match but an upset could be on the cards.

Prediction: Andreeva in three sets.
