It is the turn of the top half of the men’s draw and bottom half of the women’s draw  on the first Monday of the tournament and defending champion, Jannik Sinner is looking to defend his maiden Grand Slam title. The most successful year of his career has been overshadowed by his doping case which divided the world of tennis. He will face Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, who struggled on the hard courts in the second half of 2024.

He started the season reaching the quarter-finals of Brisbane, losing to the eventual champion, Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. While his powerful serve can win him free points, he can cancel that out by an abundance of unforced errors. Their third meeting should be gentle start for the Italian as his opponent’s weak return game would give him a lot of room to break serve and take time away from Jarry. The Chilean’s forehand can be an effective one-two punch combination, but should be no match for Sinner.

Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.

Ten-time champion Novak Djokovic will start his bid to win his 25th Grand Slam and to add an 11th Australian Open to his tally, as he continues to chase down records held by Margaret Court, when he faces American Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round.

2024 was the first year in his career since 2006 that Djokovic did not win an ATP title but he won the singles gold medal at the Olympics, which was the one major accolade that had eluded him. He lost in the Brisbane quarter-final to Reilly Opelka before heading to Melbourne to work with new coach Andy Murray.

Basavareddy turned professional five weeks ago, a day before he played the NextGen ATP finals and calls Djokovic his idol and inspiration to play tennis. Having played only three professional level matches, his experience comes with winning two challenger titles last year on hard surface, and has been ranked world number three as a junior.

Facing Djokovic in his wheelhouse will be a challenge that he has been looking forward to, but Djokovic’s experience will overpower the teenager’s strong groundstrokes. Expect long rallies of shots, and quick footwork all around the court.

Prediction: Djokovic in straight sets.

Five-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek will start her bid for her first Australian Open title. The Pole won the US Open in 2022, but has only made it to the quarter-finals at a hard-court grand slam since then. She has also had to deal with the fallout of the news of failing a doping test due to contamination from heart medication. She served a ban of a month withdrawing from the Asian swing and citing personal reasons last year.

She faces Katerina Siniakova in the first round. The Czech is widely experienced on all the surfaces and has a doubles prowess to offer, with her strong baseline play and hitting precise shots. The doubles world number one’s game has become bankable at the grand slams but her record against the top players in singles remains thin on the ground.

The match can bring in some bold shots played by both the players, with angular backhands from Swiatek to strong reflex and powerful shots from the all-court player Siniakova.

Prediction: Swiatek in three sets.
