World number one Jannik Sinner had his first real struggle of the tournament as he battled past Holger Rune. However his Danish opponent wasn’t the biggest struggle of the match as he had to overcome illness in order to even play the match and that will be concerning to the defending champion ahead of the next three matches. The athleticism and power of Sinner is there but now the Italian needs to show champion’s qualities and show strong mental fortitude with the rest of the field looking to raise their game in order to dethrone the Italian in Melbourne.

Sinner’s champion’s qualities will be put to the test against home favourite Alex De Minaur. The Australian achieved another career milestone when he reached his first Australian Open quarter-final with a straight sets win over Alex Michelsen. The eighth seed has come alive over the last 12 months and his persistence and resilience has paid off as he is now into the final eight on home soil after seven failed attempts. It will be a moment to savour for De Minaur but now the Australian needs to prove if he has what it takes to go all the way as he carries the hope of a nation on his shoulders.

Sinner will need to serve aggressively and will use the forehand to overpower the Australian and force errors from De Minaur’s game. The eighth seed will use his improved serve to force returning errors from Sinner as he will need consistent depth to force shorter balls from the Italian in order to hit aggressive forehand winners. This will be a good test for Sinner but as the head-to-head points out the Italian does everything better than De Minaur and the Italian should progress in a tight four set encounter.

Prediction: Sinner in four sets.

Iga Swiatek is on a mission in Melbourne as she is into her second Australian Open quarter-final. A combined total of 11 games lost so far from Swiatek as she has bulldozed her way into the last eight and now bids for a first semi-final in Melbourne. However the Pole will know tougher tests are to come and will be aware about the dangers of being undercooked heading into a potential final showdown with Aryna Sabalenka. Now the question is can Swiatek keep her composure and consistency in order to continue her streak going in Australia?

Next up for Swiatek is US Open semi-finalist Emma Navarro with the American having completely the opposite route to the final eight. Four long and brutal matches which has seen Navarro overcome a tough draw that has seen her secure victories over Peyton Stearns, Ons Jabeur, Xiyu Wang and Daria Kasatkina. The eighth seed seems to thrive on long matches where she can win the battle of endurance but can the American adapt her game in an environment where long matches may not be an option? Time will tell but one thing is for sure and that’s Navarro never lacks confidence and will hope her personality can help her win once again.

Swiatek will dictate play using the forehand as she looks to keep her aggression on serve and put pressure on Navarro’s defensive game. Meanwhile the American will continue to try and extend the rallies, looking for depth to force errors from the Pole’s game. This could be a good test for Swiatek but the Pole is in fine form and will have no problems ensuring that this is Navarro’s first short match of the tournament.

Prediction: Swiatek in straight sets.

It has been a hard-fought route to the quarter-finals for Ben Shelton but once again the American finds himself in the last eight. After getting past Lorenzo Musetti and Gael Monfils, Shelton will be in even more confident mood as the American’s explosive serve and movement is a force to be reckoned with when at it’s best. Now Shelton will be hoping he can match talent with consistency as he bids for a second Grand Slam semi-final.

Next up for Shelton is surprise quarter-finalist Lorenzo Sonego who taken advantage of an opportunistic draw to reach the last eight. After getting past Andrey Rublev’s conqueror, Joao Fonseca, in the second round the Italian hasn’t looked back as he is now into a first Grand Slam quarter-final. Now Sonego looks to use his effortless power to dominate the tempo of the rallies and reach a new milestone in his career at 29 years old.

Shelton will continue to be explosive on serve and use the forehand to force Sonego into defensive positions. Meanwhile Sonego will look to find depth on the backhand and approach the net in order to finish points off efficiently. Shelton’s quality and experience at this level should prove too strong in what is set to be a big occasion for both players.

Prediction: Shelton in four sets.

It’s been an incredible last couple of weeks for Madison Keys who has backed up her Adelaide title with a fourth appearance in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The American knocked out sixth seed Elena Rybakina in a flawless performance to reach the last eight and seems to be playing better as she gains more experience on the tour. The 19th seed’s forehand and serve continues to do damage and now Keys bids for a third Australian Open semi-final.

A resurgent Elina Svitolina is next for Keys as the Ukrainian is playing her way back into form at the Australian Open. Wins over Jasmine Paolini and Veronika Kudermetova have ensured that Svitolina has regained her confidence playing some aggressive tennis on return and is now into a third Australian Open quarter-final. Now Svitolina will hope that she can continue this run going as she looks to break her semi-final curse in Melbourne.

Keys will use the forehand to dictate play as she will approach the net to take advantage of Svitolina’s deep court positioning. Meanwhile Svitolina will use the backhand to turn points around in her favour and force errors from Keys. This will be a tight contest but Keys’ confidence and consistent serving makes her favourite heading into this fascinating contest.

Prediction: Keys in three sets.
