Emma Raducanu def. Shelby Rogers 6-3 6-3

Emma Raducanu booked her spot in the second round, after a straightforward win against America’s Shelby Rogers. In their first match against each other since Raducanu’s winning run to the US Open title in 2021, Raducanu had the upper-hand.

She already had a couple of matches under her belt in Auckland but chose to retire from a couple of exhibition matches, citing soreness in her return to the tour for the first time in eight months, during which she had surgery on her wrist and ankles.

A single break mid-way through the first set was all she needed to secure the lead, and she as quick to capitalise, breaking Rogers immediately at the start of the second set and once more before serving the match out to love.

There is very little to separate the pair this year, which suggests we will see a close battle for either of these players to advance into the third round for the first time.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Raducanu has had a mix of matches this year, from hard fought battles to straightforward victories, but given how close the pair are in stats, this probably falls into the former category. Wang will feel that she has dodged a bullet, having had to come from a set and a double break down in her opener. Now she might feel she is playing with the house money, as she bids to overturn her 0-5 record on the second round of slams.

Prediction: Raducanu in three sets
