Dan Evans continued his early season form as he dispatched former quarter-finalist David Goffin with a loss of seven games. A competitive opening set played out with both players showing sturdy defence and a mixture of power and variety early on. Aggressive tennis from the Belgian in the early stages saw Evans survive some service scares.

Eventually it was the Brit who would create the first break points of the match as Goffin was the first blink in the tenth game. A break to love sealed the opening set in 39 minutes for the 24th seed. Evans continued the momentum in the second set as he broke for a 2-0 lead in a long return game.

Goffin wasn’t a former quarter-finalist for nothing and the Belgian turned up the attacking intent in the seventh game to get the break back as Evans stubborn defence showed weaknesses. However Evans’ power from the back of the court was just too much for Goffin as he broke in the next game and closed out the set for a two set to love lead.

From then on Evans dominated play and Goffin faded out with the Belgian hitting 36 unforced errors during the entire match. The world number 24 completed eight games in a row to seal his place in the second round in a comfortable match from the British number two.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Rinderknech has had a great start to the season having reached the Adelaide 2 final, losing to Thanasi Kokkinakis which was followed up by a five set epic win over Alexei Popyrin in the opening round here. The Frenchman has a big serve with solid attacking and defensive shot selection to match making him an awkward opponent to face.

Evans will need to use his variety and rally tolerance here if he wants to reach the last 32 here. The Frenchman will look to make as many first serves as possible while Evans will look to extend the rallies as much as possible. The Brit has been impressive so far this season and that shouldn’t change against a slightly fatigued opponent.

Prediction: Evans in four sets.
