Although Evans leads in most of the stats, Nakashima’s confidence at the moment is evident with the amount of service games won. Evans will need to step up his level in important moments if he wants to reach the third round.

Playing styles and prediction

Nakashima heads into Washington in confident form having reached back-to-back finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta. Losses to Cameron Norrie and John Isner are no mean feat and show that it will take something special to beat him. The American’s mix of athleticism, defensive skills and accurate serving are a dangerous combination as most of his opponents have found out.

Evans’ slice will need to be used quite a lot to test Nakashima’s ability to produce aggressive winners from the back of the court. This is a tough match for the Brit in his comeback match and he will need to play his best tennis in order to reach the last 16. If Evans has a good serving day then the Brit has a good chance of winning otherwise it could be a tough afternoon for the sixth seed.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
