Dan Evans [WC] def Alex Michelsen [13] 6-4 6-4
Dan Evans made it seven wins in a row in Washington as he defeated Alex Michelsen in straight sets. There was no back-up plan for the American as he failed to cope with Evans’ variety and creativity in big moments. The former champion got off to a quick start, converting his first break point for a 2-1 lead.
There was still work for Evans to do as he soon faced break point from the American but the Brit produced some explosive shots under pressure to fend off the threat in the sixth game. Although Michelsen had settled on serve, the American was rather incompetent in the big points as he failed to prepare for Evans’ variety. The Brit closed things out rather comfortably to take the opening set.
In the second set, Evans couldn’t maintain his high level of concentration and play as he went an early break down in the second game with Michelsen taking a 2-0 lead. In the following game, Evans displayed his high quality returning as the 13th seed once again failed to deal with the Brit’s best level with Evans comfortably breaking back. As the set went on it was actually Evans’ serve who was under the most pressure as he was forced to survive two long service holds.
The ineffectiveness of Michelsen on return was telling and his failure to create any break points in those return games cost him dearly. Evans converted break point in the ninth game and converted his fourth match point to book his place in the third round of Washington.

Playing Styles and Prediction
Moutet has earned some pretty big wins over the last couple of months with Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz being unable to adapt to his funky and disruptive style of play. The Frenchman is now hoping to do more damage on the American hard court swing and will be full of confidence heading into his match with Evans.
Evans will need to be slightly more aggressive than he usually is as he is facing an opponent that will match his creativity and shot selection. Meanwhile, Moutet will continue to be disruptive while maintaining his aggressive yet efficient serving that has seen him in such good form recently. This will be a competitive match with both players looking to force errors from the other with Moutet being a tricky opponent stylistically for Evans.
Prediction: Moutet in three sets.
