Evans will need to raise his level on serve and return given Barrere’s overall consistency this season as shown in the Frenchman’s statistics for the season.

Playing styles and prediction

Barrere has had an inconsistent season but finds himself on the brink of a place in the top 50 in the world after a run to the Eastbourne semi-finals. Now Barrere looks to find his big serve and powerful forehand as he looks to take advantage of Evans’s lack of confidence as he looks for a deep run in Washington.

Evans will be looking for better consistency on serve as he looks to neutralise the Barrere forehand on return as he looks to use the slice to open up the court. The Frenchman will look to continue the confident serving that he has used all season as he looks to test Evans’ defence from the baseline. There is no predicting how this match will go however Evans will be hoping for more effort and better body language as he will look to maintain his confidence throughout the contest as he looks for a first ATP tour win since Barcelona.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
