WASHINGTON D.C., USA – Liam Broady continues his winning ways by beating Corentin Moutet in his opening round in Washington and will now face 12th seed Tallon Griekspoor.

Liam Broady continued his winning ways in Washington after a straight sets win over Corentin Moutet. Broady continued the recent pattern of being aggressive and efficient on return as he broke in the early game for a 2-0 lead with some attacking net play helping along the way. However the Brit was immediately broken back as he failed to close out what should have been a comfortable service game with Moutet constructing some effective patterns of play to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The opening set was a rollercoaster ride for both players as Broady was too passive in key moments allowing the Frenchman to carve out the perfect opportunity to hit his powerful forehand down the line. There was no passive play from Broady in the eighth game though as an attacking smash from the baseline saw him regain the initiative as he served for the opening set at 5-3.
However the Frenchman came back into the set as Broady couldn’t finish off the set as he produced too many erratic errors. The slice of Moutet did some lethal damage as not only did he break back but the Frenchman sealed three games in a row to have the opportunity to serve for the opening set himself.
During Broady’s run at Wimbledon, the Brit had to be resilient and that’s what he did in this match as he won a cat and mouse type point to save set point and break back, forcing a first set tiebreak. It was a tiebreak that Broady dominated as he won all seven points with some silky play at the net helping him to the opening set.
Moutet ended the first set frustrated and he would start the second set even more frustrated as Broady sealed a flawless opening return game with a backhand winner as he secured the break to love. The momentum was with the Brit as Moutet was having to work hard just to hold serve with the world number 125 beating the Frenchman as his own game.
However that didn’t mean the Frenchman was out of this match just yet as he showed his quality from the baseline to seal the break back out of nowhere to level the set at 2-2. The set was still in Broady’s grasp though as the Brit would respond emphatically with a break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Broady’s approaches to the net continued to put Moutet under pressure with the Frenchman running out of time to find solutions.
In the end Moutet couldn’t find the answer to Broady’s aggressive play as the Brit closed out the match to love to seal a place in the second round.

Griekspoor’s dominant serving was evident over the grass court season but that will be put to the test against Broady’s efficient returning.

Playing styles and predictions
Griekspoor has risen up the rankings with some great performances over the grass court season including winning the title on home soil in s-Hertogenbosch. However the Dutchman will now look to overcome disappointment of exiting Wimbledon in the first round as he looks to continue his dominant serving and continue his bid for a US Open seeding.
Broady will look to be patient from the baseline while continuing to approach the net in order to be aggressive and force Griekspoor into uncomfortable defensive positions. Meanwhile Griekspoor will look to dictate the tempo of the match from his serve and use depth to force shorter balls from Broady which will allow the Dutchman to finish off points quicker. This will be a good test for Broady against top 40 opposition ahead of the US Open and a match that will test his quality under pressure in what should be a tight match between too attacking players.
Prediction: Broady in three sets.
