Jack Draper [7] def Luciano Darderi 7-5 6-1
Jack Draper is into the Vienna quarter-finals after a straight sets win over Luciano Darderi. Just like his opening round match, Draper was rusty to start the match as an aggressive Darderi tested his serve early on. However the British number one produced some accurate serving in order to halt Darderi’s momentum with the seventh seed then creating some break points of his own.
Two break points were created in the seventh game as Draper dictated both the baseline and net rallies. However some aggressive serving secured the hold for Darderi with the world number 42 taking a 4-3 lead. There were no problems for Draper on serve as his first serve was accurate and consistent with two consecutive love holds being produced.
This allowed Draper to have some freedom on return and in the eleventh game, Draper’s persistent pressure paid off as he broke on his fourth break point of the set to secure a 6-5 lead. A third consecutive love hold secured an impressive first set after 45 minutes, surviving the early storm from the Italian.
Winning the first set gave Draper more confidence as he broke in the opening game with some aggressive tennis. The early deficit didn’t faze Darderi with the Italian creating break point in the following game as he continued to crush the forehands past Draper. However the world number 18 was clutch on serve as he consolidated the break to take a 2-0 lead.
Despite winning the next game, Darderi had run out of ideas as Draper’s athletic defence mixed with an aggressive attack was a winning combination. Two more breaks of serve was produced by Draper as he ended the day with 34 winners, securing a place in the quarter-finals.

Playing Styles and Prediction
Since his disappointing US Open defeat to Draper, Machac has been in sensational form having beaten Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the Shanghai semi-finals. That has been followed up with a win over Grigor Dimitrov en route to the last eight in Vienna. Now Machac looks to end his incredible breakthrough season by gaining revenge over Draper and finishing the year strongly.
Draper will need to be aggressive on return and neutralize Machac’s defensive skills as the Czech Republican will look to continue being effective on serve. This should be an intriguing match between two world class players with this match expected to be much tighter than their US Open clash. If Draper can be consistent enough then he has the quality to edge a thrilling match but this will be one of his toughest tests of the season.
Prediction: Draper in three sets.
