Bublik has the edge on the serving stats while Evans is more dominant and clinical on return as the Brit will have to play the pressure points well if he wants to advance to the second round in Canada.

Playing styles and prediction

The Kazakh has had an inconsistent season despite some good wins over Grigor Dimitrov, Aslan Karatsev, Denis Shapovalov and Taylor Fritz. Bublik has not won more than two matches at a tournament since Madrid which is expected considering his erratic and charismatic style of play which very much reflects his personality.

Evans will need to remain consistent and solid throughout the match against a very streaky player who can play a varied level of tennis. The Brit will need to extend the rallies as much as possible to stop Bublik’s firepower from the back of the court mixed with impressive net play. Expect the unexpected is definitely the plot of this match but the Brit’s effective slice and consistency could be the difference in this very tentative contest.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
