Andy Murray is into the second round in Stockholm after overcoming a tough test in the second set from qualifier Viktor Durasovic. The Brit raced to a double break lead converting two of his three break point opportunities with some incredible defensive sliced backhands and some deep returns.

The Norwegian eventually settled into the match with some big serving and forehand combinations. However it was Murray who held his nerve to comfortably take the opening set 6-1 in 29 minutes. The three-time grand slam champion once again put pressure on Durasovic by breaking him on his fourth break point of the opening game.

Despite this Durasovic showed great determination in the second set, making Murray pay for some short approach shots as well as taking advantage of unforced errors from the Brit. On his first break point of the match, Durasovic converted to level the second set at 3-3 and eventually the second set would go to a tiebreak.

The Norwegian pushed Murray to his limits and would save two match points in the tiebreak to level it up at 6-6. However a long final rally sealed the tiebreak 9-7 for the Brit as he moves into the second round in a hard-fought victory.

Playing styles and prediction

Sinner has had another great season having reached five finals in 2021 as well as testing the best players in the world and came within touching distance of reaching the ATP Finals in his home country. The Italian hits big, serves big and has no real technical flaws which makes it hard to grind past him.

Murray will need to be aggressive as possible and cannot leave many balls short otherwise they will go punished. It is a similar match-up to Carlos Alcaraz but Sinner has more consistency on the backhand side. Murray’s return is going to be crucial and this will be a good test heading into 2022 where the Brit’s game really is.

Prediction: Sinner in three sets.
