After losing a tight Beijing final to Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner has responded in emphatic fashion as he began his Shanghai campaign by thrashing Taro Daniel. It has been a difficult last month for the world number one with a cloud hanging over his head over the doping controversy and that isn’t done yet with WADA appealing the ITIA’s ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Despite all this, Sinner has remained focused on the task at hand as he looks to end the year as world number one for the first time in his career.
The next test for Sinner comes in the form of Tomas Martin Etcheverry who never wins any match in easy fashion. It took the Argentinian three hours and 43 minutes to get past Botic Van De Zandschulp as he continued his incredibly consistent season. The standouts of Martin Etcheverry’s season have included reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona and the final in Lyon. However the Argentinian will know he will have to be a bit better than that at big events if he wants to continue his climb up the rankings and that bid will start this week in Shanghai.
Sinner will use the serve and forehand to move Martin Etcheverry out of position and will look to crush the short balls, converting them into winners. Meanwhile the Argentinian will use depth to move Sinner behind the baseline as he aims to rush the Italian’s play. This will be a physically testing match for the world number one but a match he should have enough quality to prevail in.
Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.

After a season full of tight defeats, Daniil Medvedev will be keen to gain some much-needed momentum heading into the 2025 season. Medvedev lost a narrow quarter-final to Sinner at the US Open before losing to Alcaraz in the semi-finals in Beijing. However it would be ridiculous to underestimate Medvedev on hard courts and the fifth seed will be keen to capitalize on his recent momentum and finish the season strong as he bids to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Next up for Medvedev is one of the most improved players on the tour in the form of Italian Matteo Arnaldi. The 23 year-old has risen to a career-high ranking of 30 in the world this season playing an aggressive all-court game, maintaining consistency throughout the season. However as the competition increases, Arnaldi will need to strengthen his qualities in the off-season if he wants to regularly be seeded for Grand Slam tournaments. The Italian will hope to win a couple of big matches before he signs off for the season and focuses on next year.
Medvedev will remain solid from the baseline and will look to take the forehand early as he rushes Arnaldi’s baseline game. Meanwhile Arnadi will be proactive on the backhand side and create angles in order to move Medvedev from side to side. This will be a good test for Medvedev but the fifth seed should make it a fourth consecutive win over the Italian.
Prediction: Medvedev in three sets.
Ugo Humbert [16] v Gael Monfils H2H & Match Fundamentals
Ugo Humber [16] v Gael Monfils | H2H: Humbert leads 3-1 |

After an inconsistent season, Ugo Humbert gained some much-needed momentum by reaching the Tokyo final. However the Frenchman will be stinging from the fact that he had championship point against compatriot Arthur Fils and will look to move on from that over the next few weeks. The 16th seed’s big serve and heavy groundstrokes make him a tough player to beat and he will hope to continue to be difficult as the season reaches its conclusion.
An exhilarating match awaits against Gael Monfils as the 38 year-old continues to prove that age is just a number. A well earned three set win over Sebastian Baez ensures the Frenchman is into the third round in Shanghai as he continues to get better as he sits inside the world’s top 50. As his career is seemingly approaching the end, Monfils will hope that he can have the energy to continue his amazing streak of entertaining at the highest level with another big win in sight in Shanghai.
Humbert will use his big serve to dictate play as he will use a mixture of slice and spin to force errors from Monfils. Meanwhile Monfils will look to be explosive on the forehand side as he aims to accelerate the rallies and force Humbert behind the baseline. This will be an entertaining match with Monfils expected to push Humbert all the way. However the French number one should have enough to seal a big victory.
Prediction: Humbert in three sets.
