There have been some painful defeats for Daniil Medvedev this season but ultimately it’s been another consistent season for the fifth seed. Despite a tough test from Matteo Arnaldi, Medvedev is still showing why he is one of the best hard court players on the tour with resilience getting him over the finish line. The ATP Finals is in sight for Medvedev and the former US Open champion will hope to overcome fatigue in a bid to end the year strong and earn some momentum for next season.
Now Medvedev gets to reignite one of his fiercest ever rivalries as he takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last 16. After a turbulent year on and off the court, Tsitsipas has produced some of the best tennis of the year to cruise into the fourth round with wins over Kei Nishikori and Alexandre Muller. The tenth seed will be hoping a lack of expectation and pressure is working in his favour as he is looking to capture the winning feeling back in search for a major title next season. The question remains though whether Tsitsipas can maintain consistency in this form or whether this is an anomaly in what has been an underwhelming year?
Medvedev will look to rush and target Tsitsipas’ forehand as the fifth seed aims to force erratic errors from Tsitsipas. Meanwhile the Greek will need to serve well as he will shorten the points at the net as well as using dropshots to force Medvedev into uncomfortable positions. This will be an interesting battle with Tsitsipas’ rejuvenated form putting him in a good position to win this match against a fatigued Medvedev.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in three sets.

A very tough test for world number one Jannik Sinner as the Italian edged past Tomas Martin Etcheverry in three sets. As the season approaches its conclusion, Sinner’s resilience will keep getting tested as it has been an emotionally and physically exhausting season with lots of obstacles in his way of success. Now with an important next few months coming up for Sinner, the Italian will hope he can maintain his high level as he continues to prove why he is the best player in the world.
Another big test awaits Sinner in the form of big-serving American Ben Shelton. The 21 year-old has overcome the disappointment of an early US Open exit as well as failing to defend his Tokyo title in style as he is yet to drop a set in Shanghai. Shelton’s game is still evolving but the American has produced a consistently high level this season and would love to end the year by beating the best player in the world, producing his best win of the year.
The serve will be crucial for both players but especially for Shelton as Sinner’s return continues to get better with each tournament with the American looking to neutralize the Italian’s return with body serves. This should be an entertaining match but Sinner should have too much quality from the baseline as a place in the quarter-finals is on the line.
Prediction: Sinner in three sets.
Carlos Alcaraz [3] v Gael Monfils H2H & Match Fundamentals
Carlos Alcaraz [3] v Gael Monfils | H2H: Alcaraz leads 2-1 |

After surviving a tough first set against Yibing Wu, Carlos Alcaraz kept his composure to win his 11th consecutive match since his second round defeat at the US Open. The Spaniard’s reported demise has been greatly exaggerated with Alcaraz producing some world class tennis to continue his dominant season so far. After winning two Grand Slam titles, Alcaraz would love nothing more than to continue his momentum and win the ATP Finals at the end of year as he has ambitions of ending the year as world number one.
Revenge will be on the mind of Alcaraz as the Spaniard takes on Gael Monfils in the fourth round. The Spaniard lost to Monfils in Cincinnati and the Frenchman would love to cause another upset in Shanghai with the 38 year-old continuing to entertain crowds. Another big win for Monfils over Ugo Humbert confirmed that the Frenchman still has the talent and will now hope the consistency can follow with an Australian Open seeding on his mind.
Alcaraz will use a mixture of depth and power to force errors from Monfils as he will continue to apply pressure on return. Meanwhile Monfils will use the serve to neutralize Alcaraz’s strengths as the Frenchman will dictate the tempo of the rallies on his forehand. As long as Alcaraz can cut down the unforced errors and maintain a high level then he should earn a comfortable victory in Shanghai.
Prediction: Alcaraz in straight sets.
