Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie will face each other in an all-British second round clash after the pair won their opening round matches in straight sets over Kevin Anderson and Dominik Koepfer respectively.

Starting with Evans who had to grind past a confident Anderson to reach the second round. In the first both men had to chances to break but produced some bold serving to keep the set on serve. Some clutch volleying from Anderson left Evans frustrated as the first set would go to a first tiebreak with the deadlock yet to be broken. In a lengthy tiebreak Evans saved three set points and a forehand unforced error from the South African saw the Brit take the opening tiebreak 13-11.

In the second set Evans was forced to save a couple of break points in the seventh and eleventh games as Anderson produced some consistently powerful hitting from the back of the court. The second break point was saved through a scruffy backhand slice dropshot as the Brit was surviving dangerous territory. However Evans created his first break point of the set in the twelfth game and a backhand unforced error from Anderson sealed a big win for Evans.

Evans will now face compatriot Norrie after he beat Koepfer in straight sets. Two breaks in the opening set saw Norrie comfortably take the opening set 6-2 in 34 minutes. The second was a little more scrappy with both players breaking each other in the opening two games and in the ninth and tenth games respectively. However on his second match point Norrie sealed a fifth break of the match to seal a place in the second round.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Norrie has had the better season this year and will enter this match full of confidence with his ability to be aggressive from the back of the court. However Evans will look to capitalise on a positive US Open campaign that saw him to the type of tennis that has seen him a consistent top 30 player.

Evans will look to use a mix of aggression and slice to unsettle the Brit’s rhythm while Norrie will be relying on his ability to make Evans uncomfortable from the baseline in unique situations. Either way this should be a fascinating match that could indicate who will be British number one by the end of the year.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
