Dan Evans v Philipp Kohlschreiber | H2H tied at 1-1

After a busy start to the New Year, British No. 1 Dan Evans is back in tour action as he makes his debut at ATP Rotterdam. First up for him is Philipp Kohlschreiber – tour stalwart and a one-time semi-finalist at this event.

Evans seemed to be more at ease at the ATP Cup with the mantle of British No. 1 than perhaps he did at the Davis Cup Finals, and it looked like he was turning all sorts of corners as he won his first five-setter at a Slam, but the busy start to 2020 left him flat in a second round he was expected to win.

Kohlschreiber has fallen a fair way from his previous career high of No. 16 in the world, and the start of his year has been stilted after he provided a walkover at the Australian Open with an abdominal strain.

The German baseliner hits with a lot of topspin and has a more solid backhand than perhaps his forehand and likes to play an aggressive return game. He can be a little weak with a functional serve, rather than one that consistently wins him free points. He has been a regular visitor to this tournament and will be comfortable with the surroundings.

For Evans, his variety and movement are much improved, and he has started to prove he can mix it in the higher rankings, although he is still prone to getting himself distracted when things are not necessarily going his way.

Their past encounters have always been three setters, so expect this to be a longer battle.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
