While Dan Evans is enjoying his first real successes on this surface, the clay court is not necessarily Taylor Fritz’s best friend this season. With just one back to back win, and three straight losses, the momentum looks to be firmly with the Brit.

Evans has been steady with his progress of wins on clay with a high of reaching the semi-final in Monte Carlo, but has also had a lot of gruelling battles especially in Madrid. However, in the more claggy environment of Rome, it could be even more of a fight on his hands.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Fritz has a forceful serve and is solid off both wings, and can create some sharp angles across court, which should test the versatility of Evans. But a large part of his success has been putting his repertoire of shots together with the movement and timing needed on clay.

Evans should expect this to be tight as Fritz will prefer to get cheap points on his serve, bit Evans in general has been more consistent over the clay court swing, and it should stand him in good stead in his opener.

Prediction: Evans in straight sets.
