Cameron Norrie is into the quarter-finals in Rio De Janeiro for a second consecutive year after only dropping two games against Tomas Barrios Vera. The Brit was dominant throughout the contest as he set the tone of the match early on with a break at 2-0 as Barrios Vera produced too many unforced errors.

The break advantage wasn’t held for long as Barrios Vera produced an aggressive return game to break back immediately with a forehand winner. However that was the only bit of success the Chilean would have in the opening set as he played too many passive and safe shots.

The second seed continued to dictate play from the baseline as he reeled off backhand winners to continue to break serve. A fourth consecutive game for Norrie was sealed with a missed forehand return from Barrios Vera as the opening set was decided in 25 minutes.

In the second set Norrie continued his momentum as Barrios Vera struggled to be aggressive from the baseline. The Brit approached the net and a neat forehand volley sealed the break in the opening game. However, with the deficit at only one break, Barrios Vera produced a stunning game in the fourth game to create break point. The Chilean used a mix of depth and power on the backhand to stun Norrie as Barrios Vera looked to turn the momentum in his favour.

However Norrie produced some aggressive serving to hold before putting the pressure back on Barrios Vera in the following game. Despite an incredible drop shot, Barrios Vera couldn’t prevent a Norrie cross-court winner as the Brit sealed a 4-1 lead.

The defending champion secured his place in the quarter-finals with a backhand winner at the net as he broke for a sixth time in the match.

Tale of the Tape – Key Stats (2024)

H2H: Cameron Norrie (WR 23) Thiago Seyboth Wild (WR 82)
Tournament Previous Best Champion (2023) R1 (2019)
1st Serve % 61.4 65.8
Service Games Won % 88.5 78
Break Points Saved % 72 72.5
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 51.5 46.5
Break Points Converted % 41.5 35.6

Norrie’s statistics on serve have slightly dipped throughout the tournament which will be something the Brit will be keen to get right against a confident player like Seyboth Wild.

Playing Styles and Prediction

After winning two Challenger titles towards the end of last season, Seyboth Wild’s form has dipped this season. The Brazilian entered this week having lost five of his six matches to start the year but has now scored two three set victories in Brazil. Now Seyboth Wild will look to use the home crowd to his advantage as he looks to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Norrie will aim to continue his aggression on serve as he will come to the net to shorten the points and make Seyboth Wild feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile the Brazilian will look to win the war of attrition from the baseline as he will aim to use depth to force Norrie behind the baseline. This should be a tough match for Norrie against a fired-up Brazilian crowd but the Brit should have too much quality for the out-of-sorts Seyboth Wild.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
