NOTTINGHAM, UK – Jacob Fearnley came through qualifying and claimed his first Challenger title. The Brit took out the third seed along the way. Marcus Willis claimed the doubles title.
Jacob Fearnley came through qualifying at the ATP Challenger event. In the first round the Brit was against Bu Yunchaokete. The Chinese was no match for the Brit in the first set. Fearnley dominated and took the lead. The second set was closer. The qualifier managed to break serve right at the end of the set to move into the next round 6-2, 7-5.
The second round the qualifier was against fellow Brit Paul Jubb. In the first set Fearnley eased through to take the lead. Jubb fought back in the second to force a tiebreak. The tiebreak was very long and Jubb eventually edged through to level the match. The final set saw Fearnley once again break serve and move into the next round 6-3, 6-7(14), 6-3.
In the quarter-final Fearnley was against third seed Shang Juncheng. The first set was very close, as both players went toe to toe. It looked to be heading to a tiebreak, however, the Brit managed to secure the break of serve right at the end to take the lead. The second set was more of the same, as the Chinese player tried to get back into the match. However, the Brit again broke serve and moved into the next round 7-5, 7-5.
The semi-final saw the Brit against Mattia Bellucci. The Italian found Fearnley too good in the first set, as the Brit eased through and got an early break of serve. The second set was even easier for the Brit. Fearnley dominated and moved into the final 6-3, 6-1.
In the final Fearnley was against fellow Brit and another qualifier Charles Broom. The first set saw Broom break and take the lead. Fearnley fought back in the second set, breaking Broom and levelling up the match. The final set saw Fearnley break early and hold on to take his first Challenger title 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Doubles
Marcus Willis teamed up with John Peers and the pair were the top seeds. In the first round the Brit/Australian were drawn against Tomas Barrios Vera & Patrick Kypson. The top seeds dominated the first set to take the lead. The second was slightly closer, but Willis & Peers managed to break serve and move into the next round 6-2, 6-3.
The quarter-final saw Willis & Peers against Aidan McHugh & Jack Pinnington Jones. However, the all British team were unable to take to the court. Willis & Peers moved into the semi-final without having to hit a ball. 0-0 (RET).
In the semi-final the top seeds were against Duje Ajdukovic & Damir Dzumhur. The Croatian/Bosnian pair were also unable to take to the court, so the Brit/Aussie once again received a walkover this time to the final 0-0 (RET).
The final saw Willis & Peers against Harold Mayot & Luke Saville. The top seeds dominated the first set, barely putting a foot wrong to take the lead. The second set saw Mayot & Saville re-group and force a tiebreak. In the breaker the French/Aussie pair dominated and levelled up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak it was the top seeds that edged through and took the title 6-1, 6-7(1), 10-7.
Nottingham Round Up
Arthur Fery was defeated by Jack Pinnington Jones in the first round 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Jan Choinski was defeated by Alex Bolt in the first round 7-6(12), 7-5.
Joshua Paris with Blake Ellis were defeated by Aidan McHugh & Jack Pinnington Jones in the first round 6-4, 6-7(2), 10-4.
Jacob Fearnley & Cameron Norrie were defeated by Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli & Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha in the first round 7-6(1), 6-4.
Cameron Norrie was defeated by Jack Pinnington Jones in the second round 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Henry Searle was defeated by Dan Evans in the second round 7-6(4), 7-6(5).
Jack Pinnington Jones was defeated by Mattia Bellucci in the quarter-final 6-4, 7-6(0).
Charles Broom & Ben Jones were defeated by Andre Goransson & Sem Verbeek in the quarter-final 6-3, 6-3.
Dan Evans was defeated by Charles Broom in the quarter-final 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Billy Harris was defeated by Charles Broom in the semi-final 6-4, 6-4.
