Preview: Dan Evans [8] v Marcos Giron | H2H: First Meeting

It was a rusty Dan Evans who finally took to the court after a few frantic days of tennis all over Melbourne Park. Although he was playing a predominantly clay court player, early exchanges saw him having to deflect break points in the first game before going a break down. Evans regrouped to take the first set, but still had to put up with some sterling resistance in the second set by Pedro Sousa, before closing out the win.

His draw opens up a bit with Marcos Giron having removed the seeded Adrian Mannarino who was set to be Evans’ third round foe.

Playing Styles

A solid baseliner, Giron joked that he is called ‘the ball machine’ so Evans can expect a lot to come back, with interest. Going off last year’s hard-court figures they are fairly evenly matched, and Giron is sold off both wings from the back of the court.

Evans will need to look to exploit his tendency to be a little defensive, and will probably try and pull him in, although Giron can finish off his points nicely at the net, even if that is not his most natural instinct.

Prediction

Probably the most important thing for Evans is to feel that he has shaken off the rust a little bit and is ready for a first-time encounter.

Prediction: Evans in straight sets.

Evans and Giron are scheduled first on 1573 Arena at 11am (Midnight GMT).
