Jack Draper [Q] def Hugo Gaston [Q] 6-2 6-3
Jack Draper won a rain-delayed match with fellow qualifier Hugo Gaston to reach the second round in Montreal. On Monday, Draper dominated most of the match and started in impressive fashion, breaking the Frenchman to 30. In both of Gaston’s qualifying matches, his opponent retired and it was clear to see that lack of rhythm was costing him on return as Draper’s serve continued to do damage.
A break in the seventh game secured the opening set as Gaston was starting to find his feet on return with Draper’s momentum seeing him over the finishing line. In the second set Draper started it like he did the first as he broke in the opening game with consistent power. However this time the Brit couldn’t keep the slender lead as Gaston finally constructed some high quality returns to draw level in the fourth game, breaking to love.
The rain interrupted things at 3-2 to Gaston with Draper returning on Tuesday, facing a break point. The Brit would save a further two break points in an intense game before breaking for a 4-3 lead. Despite Gaston’s resilience and resolve on serve it was the Brit won all four games on the resumption of play to seal his place in the second round.

Draper more than matches up to the world number five on most statistics but Tsitsipas has been very effective on break points and will look to do the same in this match-up.
Playing Styles and Prediction
There are lots of positives for Tsitsipas to build on from the grass court season having won the Mallorca title and pushed Kyrgios to his limits during their third round encounter at Wimbledon. After having a long break Tsitsipas will be determined to continue that form and push for a title charge at the US Open.
Draper will look to be as aggressive as possible on serve and will try to put as much pressure as possible on Tsitsipas with depth and accuracy. Tsitsipas will look to play his way into form and create angles to try to force unforced errors from the Brit. This should go the distance with Tsitsipas’ quality and experience prevailing in the end.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in three sets.
