Jack Draper began his clay court season by thrashing American Marcos Giron with the loss of two games. It was a competitive start to the match with Giron displaying his brutal hitting from the baseline, taking the match to Draper. A consistently aggressive start to the match for Giron was rewarded as he created two break points in the third game, putting Draper under pressure.

However, Draper was fearless under pressure and survived the game to take a 2-1 lead before unleashing on the forehand side on return. An incredible return game saw Draper break for a 3-1 lead before coming through another testing service game to consolidate the break for 4-1. As the match went on, Giron’s serve was having no effect on the match with Draper creating three more break points in the sixth game. On his third opportunity, Draper broke serve and then held to love to take a 28 minute first set.

In the second set, both players unleashed on serve and remained aggressive as they rushed the other player’s baseline game. Once again it was Draper who seized control of the match as his confidence continued to raise with every point. Two consecutive breaks saw Draper well in control of the match, taking a 4-1 lead in the process.

Before the match could end Giron did have some success on return as the American’s backhand did some damage to create two break points. However, it was a summary of the match that Giron was unable to convert, and Draper produced his best tennis when it mattered to hold for a 5-1 lead.

More winners on the forehand saw Draper break serve for a third time in the set, sealing his place in the third round of Monte-Carlo.

Draper may have the more efficient serving statistics but it’s Davidovich Fokina who has been more clinical on return and the Spaniard will aim to do more damage on his favourite surface.

Playing Styles and Prediction

It’s been a good start to the season for Davidovich Fokina who started the year reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. The Spaniard followed that up with back-to-back finals in Delray Beach and Acapulco with now his favourite time of year approaching. Now Davidovich Fokina aims to create more magic on clay and make a deep run at a tournament where he has reached the final in the past.

Draper will use the wide serve to move Davidovich Fokina out of position as he will need to use his creative skillset in order to keep the Spaniard guessing. Meanwhile Davidovich Fokina will look to be aggressive on the forehand return, using spin to force errors from Draper. If Draper plays the level he plays against Giron then the Spaniard may have no impact on this match but if this goes the distance then you would have to fancy Davidovich Fokina in what will be an interesting contest.

Prediction: Draper in straight sets.
