After losing to Pablo Andujar in Marrakech, Dan Evans looks to bounce back at masters 1000 level in Monte-Carlo where he was a semi-finalist last year. However another tricky test awaits in Monaco as he takes on lucky loser Benjamin Bonzi after Roberto Bautista Agut withdrew.

Playing styles and prediction

Bonzi has climbed up the rankings this season having won a challenger earlier in the year and reached the semi-final at the 250 event in Marseille. Since then the Frenchman is yet to build confidence and will be hoping that the clay court season will be that next step in his search for a place in the world’s top 50.

Evans will need to improve on his effort in Marrakech and look to find different angles with his slice to open up the court. A poor result in Monaco this week will lead to a heavy drop in the rankings given his semi-final effort here last year and Bonzi can be an awkward test for any player especially those who are desperate for wins. The late change in fortune will suit Evans more and an opening round win will be a good platform in what the Brit will hope will be a positive week here.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
