Cameron Norrie overcame a resilient and spirited performance from 20 year-old Jack Draper to win the all-British clash and reach the third round in Miami. Draper settled into the match well, finding his range and power to earn a couple of early service holds. However the young Brit was to find out why this match is a step up in quality and level as Norrie’s ability to hit winners from deep defensive positions was on another gear.

The 10th seed produced a stunning return game in the sixth game as a miscued forehand from Draper secured the break to love for a 4-2 lead. However the world number 146 came back into the match and reeled off three games in a row with some consistent power that caused Norrie problems tactically. After a nervy ending, the opening set would go to a tiebreak and it was Norrie who won the crucial points and a volley winner secured the tiebreak 7-5 as well as the opening set.

In the second set, Norrie had to overcome an early barrage of power as Draper created three break points in the second game. However the world number 12 showed the difference between a top 150 player and a top 20 player as he held his serve and would break with his only break point opportunity of the set in the seventh game for a 4-3.

Draper wouldn’t back down from the challenge and continued to apply pressure on Norrie with some aggressive play. However the 10th seed saved three more break points to hold and eventually serve out the match to seal a place in the last 32 in Miami. While Draper now heads into the rest of the season with his head held high as he aims for a top 100 place by the end of the year.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Since reaching the quarter-finals at the Paris masters as a qualifier last November, Gaston has failed to pick up any momentum having only won four matches since that achievement. However the Frenchman’s latest win over Isner shows that his talent is unquestionable and will be looking to put together another dream masters 1000 run.

Norrie’s return is going to be the key to this match and he will have to use this to dictate the tempo of the rallies. Should the Brit maintain the same kind of defence he produced against Draper, then it’s hard to see how he will lose this match. However the intensity and focus needs to be there for the whole match otherwise Gaston will punish his inconsistency when he has the opportunity.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
