Andy Murray is through to the second round after a much-needed straight sets victory over Federico Delbonis. The opening set produced some entertaining rallies and a high-quality level from both as the Argentinian proved that he is more than just a clay-court specialist. The Delbonis backhand was firing on serve while Murray took advantage of the quicker courts in Miami and was effective in the longer rallies.

Murray produced some aggressive tennis at times but couldn’t find his best tennis at the crucial moments as there was nothing to separate the two players in the opening set. No break points were created as the opening set went to a tiebreak.

The tiebreak was just as close until the latter stages where Murray would find another gear on return producing aggressive shot-making. That would put the pressure on the Argentinian who double faulted on set point down to hand the opening set to the Brit in 56 minutes.

Murray would continue the momentum into the second set as he produced solid defensive play and constructed the points much more effectively. An entertaining point was finished with a volley to seal the opening break. From the on Murray took control and broke on a further two occasions with the third break sealed with a return winner to start his tournament with a victory in Miami.

Playing styles and prediction

Medvedev has produced an impressive start to the season having narrowly missed out on the Australian Open title to Rafael Nadal in a five set epic while the top seed Medvedev also reached the semi-finals in Acapulco. Medvedev will look to bounce back from an early exit at Indian Wells as he looks to regain his world number one ranking.

Murray will need rely on a more aggressive serve as well as being able to finish the points off in different ways. The Brit will look to disrupt Medvedev’s consistency through variety and aggressive patterns of play. Whatever happens in this match Murray will know by the end of this how far he is from being at the top of the game again ahead of his partnership with Ivan Lendl.

Prediction: Medvedev in three sets.
