Evans will look to take advantage of his strong returning stats to the start the season however Nishioka’s effective serve means that this will be far from an easy match.

Playing styles and prediction

After a disappointing start to the season on the main tour, Nishioka seems to have gained momentum on the challenger circuit and now looks to translate that into main draw wins on the ATP tour. The world number 96 has a stubborn baseline game and can transfer his defensive style of play into attacking tennis quickly.

Evans will look to use his slice and effectively construct points to hit efficient winners and take advantage of Nishioka’s lack of confidence. Should Evans win then this would be a big win to have heading into the clay season given the Brit’s head-to-head against the Japanese star. If Evans doesn’t play aggressive tennis then he may be punished by Nishioka’s hogh-quality baseline game.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
