H2H: Andy Murray (WR 49) Tomas Machac (WR 66)
Tournament Previous Best Champion (2008) R2 (2022)
1st Serve % 58 68
Service Games Won % 66.7 82
Break Points Saved % 57.1 50
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 58.2 55
Break Points Converted % 38.5 27.9

Murray will look to raise his level on serve and test Machac’s lack of efficiency on break points as the Czech Republican has been much better on serve than return this season.

Playing styles and prediction

Machac has had a phenomenal last few months having ended last season with two Challenger titles including beating Jack Draper in the final in Orleans. The Czech Republican has continued his fine form into 2024 with a victory over Frances Tiafoe at the Australian Open boosting his confidence. Now Machac will look to score another big win as he aims for a place inside the world’s top 50.

Murray will look to be aggressive on serve and will aim to take the ball early on return as he looks to neutralise Machac’s serve with depth. Meanwhile the world number 66 will look to mix up his serving patterns and will aim to use the forehand to test Murray’s lack of consistency. There will need to be a lot more energy from Murray than he produced in his poor loss to Benoit Paire in Montpellier. That area of Murray’s game has been lacking and if that trend continues then it could be another bad match at the office but if there is a lot more energy and aggression then the Brit has every chance to secure his first win of the season.

Prediction: Machac in three sets.
