Paul Jubb is into his maiden ATP tour quarter-final after a convincing win over Adam Walton in Mallorca. The Brit continued his fine form as he produced a mixture of depth, precision and power to break in the second game before holding serve to love for a 3-0 lead.

There wasn’t much the Australian could do about it as he lacked consistency and the tools to disrupt Jubb’s game. Not only from the baseline but Jubb was equally as accurate from the net as he would go on to break on two more occasions to seal a first set bagel in 26 minutes.

In the second set there was more resistance from the world number 107 as he dictated play and stepped into the court, denying Jubb the opportunity of setting the pace in the rallies. A string of love holds saw both players enjoying conditions on serve with short and effective rallies being produced.

Eventually it was Jubb who raised his level when he needed to as he broke on his first break point of the set to take a 5-3 lead. A landmark victory was sealed with a sensational volley at the net as the world number 289’s dream run in Mallorca continued.

Jubb will need to be smart on return in order to counter-attack Shelton’s efficient serving.

Playing styles and prediction

Shelton has had a solid season but his potential suggests he should be doing much better than just aiming for two wins a tournament. The 21 year-old will be encouraged by his third round performance at Roland Garros as he now aims to take his big-serving onto the grass where so far he had minimal success in.

Jubb will aim to be effective on serve and will look to implement the block return to engage Shelton in uncomfortable rallies. Meanwhile the American will look to use his massive serve to his advantage as he will mostly use the forehand to do the damage, shortening the points by approaching the net. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jubb win this match given Shelton’s lack of experience on grass but Shelton should have too much quality on paper.

Prediction: Shelton in three sets.
