Paul Jubb is into the second round in Mallorca after a stunning victory over Maximilian Marterer. The Brit served impressively well in the contest as he barely broke sweat against the powerful German. A tight opening game saw Jubb seal the opening break before Jubb broke again to love in the third game.

Towards the latter stages of the set, Jubb found it more difficult to maintain his lightening quick start as Marterer built confidence on serve. However a tough service game in the seventh game saw Jubb produced some effective patterns of play as he claimed the set on his second set point.

There was a tougher start to the second set as Marterer extended the rallies, forcing Jubb into some high-risk shot-making. Despite Marterer becoming more aggressive on return, Jubb kept his composure to save two break points at the start of the second set. In the fourth game, it was Marterer’s turn to fend off Jubb’s returning pressure as the Brit created five break points as he looked for the vital break.

Some big serving saw Marterer fend off the pressure from Jubb as he aimed to put pressure on the Brit in the hope that the longer the match went, the more it would favour the German. That theory was never tested as Jubb remained composed on serve and clinical on return, breaking on two more occasions to secure a place in the second round.

Jubb will aim to continue his efficiency on serve as Walton is more effective on serve than he is on return.

Playing styles and prediction

Walton has had a good season at Challenger tour level as the Australian has consistently reached semi-finals and finals. However, Walton has struggled to translate that form onto the main tour with the 25 year-old entering Mallorca with a five match losing streak. Now Walton aims to gradually build up his form and start producing better results against more competitive opposition.

Jubb will continue to be aggressive on serve as he will need to be a bit more smarter on serve than he was against Marterer. Meanwhile Walton will need to be consistent on first serve as he will look to rush Jubb’s play. This should be a more testing match for Jubb but as long as the Brit can keep up his recent level than he should advance to the quarter-finals in Mallorca.

Prediction: Jubb in three sets.
