Cameron Norrie overcame a slow start in his first round match against the sometimes inconsistent Corentin Moutet to reach the second round in Lyon. Moutet dictated play early on and used his firepower to break in the third game.

Norrie eventually adapted to the Frenchman’s game to get the break back for 3-3. The pair then exchanged breaks in the seventh and eight games before the Brit landed the crucial blow to break to love in the 12th game to claim the opening set.

In the second set Moutet overcame early pressure from Norrie to save three break points in the fourth game. Then the Frenchman broke for a 3-2 lead but couldn’t hold on to his advantage as Norrie broke straight back. The Brit’s consistent power was too much for the erratic Moutet as the World No. 49 reeled off four games in a row to claim victory.

In terms of the match the key area for Norrie is converting break points as he has a better record than Thiem this clay season with the Austrian also having better record at winning his own service games. Thiem’s second serve return points will have to improve if he wants to break Norrie’s serve on a consistent basis.

Playing Styles and Prediction

This year has been a struggle mentally and physically for the Austrian and that is something that Norrie will look to capitalise on. Based on form and how tight their previous meeting was you would have to give the edge to the Brit and say that this is his best chance to get a big top five win.

Having said that, Thiem on clay is a different beast and if the Austrian’s defensive game is firing then it really is the top seed’s match to lose. Norrie will have to increase his first serve percentage and be clinical if he wants to come away from Lyon with one of the biggest wins of his career.

Prediction: Thiem in three sets.
