Cameron Norrie [1] def Elias Ymer 7-6(4) 6-3
Cameron Norrie is into the quarter-finals in Los Cabos after ousting out Elias Ymer in a tight straight sets win. In the first set both players held comfortably as the Swede settled into the match well and found his rhythm with the groundstrokes, winning 94% of first service points. While Norrie also served confidently but struggled to create opportunities on return.
In the last two service games the Brit was forced to save three set points which he did as the first set went to a tiebreak. Despite Ymer’s attacking tennis it was Norrie who won the last three points to claim the opening set in 69 minutes.
Despite the momentum being with Norrie it was actually Ymer who got the first break of the match as he broke to love in the third game for a 2-1 lead as the pressure from the first set carried into the second set. However just as he has done on so many occasions this season, Norrie found his composure and raised his level when he needed to as he reeled off five games in a row from 3-1 down to seal victory.
The win was Norrie’s seventh ATP Quarter-final of the season and the last five games showed why he is one of the form players on the tour showing he knows when to raise his level.

The American has a stronger percentage in winning service games however it is the Brit who is stronger under pressure on serve and return which could be pivotal in this quarter-final match.
Playing Styles and Prediction
Escobedo has a big first serve and is good at defending in rallies as well as neutralising them however the American lacks consistency especially when he has to make more winners early in rallies. Escobedo’s favourite surface is traditionally clay and hasn’t played many hard court events in 2021.
Norrie’s ability to be patient and play bold, smart tennis in important moments should be the difference here. The American lacks all of those things and above all can be inconsistent. Norrie’s confidence at the moment is sky high and even when trailing in the match, the Brit’s composure ensures he can turn the match in his favour.
Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
