Evans’ chances of winning this match will depend on how consistently aggressive and intelligent he can be on return as Safiullin has been feeling confident on serve this season.

Playing styles and prediction

Despite a good start to the season, it’s now three consecutive defeats for Safiullin with two of those being to Holger Rune. Now the 26 year-old will aim to bounce back as he continues his search for a Grand Slam seeding with his big game causing lots of trouble on the tour last season.

Evans will use his slice to mix up the tempo of the rallies as he looks to be aggressive on return especially on the backhand. Meanwhile Safiullin will aim to have a high first serve percentage as he will look to use his forehand to take time away from Evans. The Brit will hope to build some confidence as he continues to struggle since his injury at the end of last year. However Safiullin’s big game suggests that this will be a tough match for the Brit to win.

Prediction: Safiullin in three sets.
