Cameron Norrie is into the third round of Indian Wells after a professional win over Lorenzo Sonego. In the opening set Norrie was aggressive, alert and proactive as he put the Italian under early pressure. The 28th seed was able to anticipate Sonego’s patterns of play effectively as a powerful forehand cross-court sealed a comfortable break of serve at 2-1.

It wasn’t all comfortable for Norrie in the opening set as Sonego rushed the net to force erratic errors from the Brit and succeeding from time to time. Despite some loose errors from Norrie, the Brit managed to save a break point in the sixth game as he took a 4-2 lead. An aggressive rest of the set from Norrie saw him hold his nerve as a precise drop shot saw Norrie hold to love and claim the opening set 6-4.

A professional opening set turned into an erratic second set from Norrie as he started the set with loose errors with Sonego increasing the aggression. The Italian’s proactive play on return paid off in the second set as Norrie’s groundstroke went beyond the baseline to give Sonego a 2-0 lead at the start of the set.

However Norrie has worked on his resilience in recent months and that paid off in the following game as he continued to extend the rallies. A loose forehand from Sonego saw Norrie gain the break back immediately as the set was back on serve. That was the first of five games in a row from Norrie as he began to be aggressive from the baseline with the errors continuing to flow from the Italian.

The British number one was both clinical from the baseline and the net as Norrie secured two more breaks of serve to be within touching distance of winning the match. Before Norrie could seal victory, Sonego was able to break back in the eighth game to stop the run of games against him before holding to serve as he forced the Brit to serve for the match.

On his second attempt Norrie was able to close out the match as he began his Indian Wells campaign with a victory.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Monfils has continued the momentum from the end of last season into this season. The Frenchman ended last year with a title in Stockholm and has produced some good wins including a three set victory over Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round. Now Monfils will aim to build momentum heading into the clay court season as he aims to have one more memorable Roland Garros this season.

Norrie will need to be proactive and aggressive especially on serve if he wants to have any chance of winning this match. Meanwhile Monfils will aim to be efficient on serve as he looks to use his athleticism to match Norrie’s stamina and physicality. This will be an entertaining match with the day time conditions favouring Norrie more than it does Monfils.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
