H2H: Dan Evans (WR 45) Roman Safiullin (WR 42)
Tournament Previous Best R3 (2021, 2022) R1 (2023)
1st Serve % 54.9 58.6
Service Games Won % 77.9 76.8
Break Points Saved % 58.7 55.2
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 51.9 42.1
Break Points Converted % 30.4 27.6

Both players have lacked efficiency on serve but there is now doubting their ability to be clutch on serve as Evans will look to maintain his consistency on serve.

Playing styles and prediction

Safiullin is in poor form recently as he enters Indian Wells with a five match losing streak including a defeat to Evans in Los Cabos. Now the world number 42 will look to use his big serve and baseline game to force errors from Evans and gain a much needed win.

Evans will aim to be proactive and use a mixture of depth and pace to neutralize Safiullin’s consistent power. Approaches to the net will be key for Evans to shorten points and the Brit’s increased confidence should see him implement this strategy effectively. At the moment Evans’ level of play is higher than Safiullin’s and that should be enough for a place in the second round.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
