Cameron Norrie is the new British number one after thrashing Diego Schwartzman with the loss of two games to reach the Indian Wells semi-finals. Norrie started the match in superior form dictating play from the back of the court and using a mixture of depth, height and speed to dominate the match.

It wasn’t just from the back of the court though as the Brit was superior at the net too with the Argentinian having no answer to Norrie’s red-hot form. Meanwhile Schwartzman failed to create a break point and an underwhelming first service percentage of 32% wasn’t going to help his cause in the opening set. A first set bagel was completed in 31 minutes as Norrie took a one set lead.

Schwartzman raised his level slightly in the second set and managed to keep the scoreboard tight to win two games. But that didn’t stop Norrie from playing in unstoppable form as the Brit was a step ahead in every single department and won the last four games to complete a magnificent performance. This sealed Norrie’s place as British number one and now will compete in his first masters 1000 semi-final.

According to the statistics, it’s Dimitrov who wins the big points on serve and is more clinical on break point opportunities so Norrie will have to raise his game in these moments if he wants to reach a sixth final of the season.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Dimitrov has shown throughout this tournament why so many were predicting big things for him at the start of his career. The level of tennis the Bulgarian has produced this week has been on another planet and wins over Medvedev and Hurkacz will only boost his confidence heading into this semi-final match.

Norrie will need to mix things up well and use the angles well if he wants to win the big points consistently. Both players’ defences have been sensational over these last ten days so expect lots of jaw-dropping points. Experience suggests Dimitrov, form suggests Norrie but one thing is guaranteed and that’s both players will give it their all for an opportunity to be favourite in a masters 1000 final.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets. Β Β
