Cameron Norrie is into his first ATP semi-final of the season after defeating Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. Despite the win, it was a rough start for Norrie who faced five break points in his opening two service games. After holding serve in the opening game, Norrie was eventually broken in the third game by an aggressive Popyrin.

In late night conditions, Norrie struggled to hit through the ball while Popyrin was patient and effective while coming to the net to finish points off. As the set went on, Norrie was more clinical on return and despite wasting break point in the eighth game the qualifier broke back in the tenth game to level the set at 5-5.

Both players were forced to work hard on serve with this opening set being decided by a tiebreak with nothing to separate them. In the tiebreak both players exchanged mini-breaks but it was Norrie who was the one who took charge of the tiebreak in crucial moments. Eventually Norrie produced some aggressive shots to take the tiebreak 8-6 and secure the opening set.

In the second set both players were efficient on serve but it was Popyrin who was under the most pressure on serve. After surviving a tight service game for a 2-1 lead, Popyrin was eventually broken in his next service game as Norrie once again forced errors from the Australian in key moments. A break in the fifth game saw the Brit in control of the contest.

There was no real pressure from Popyrin and Norrie comfortably closed out a contest that finished close to 11:30pm as he booked a place in the semi-finals.

Playing Styles and Prediction

It hadn’t been the best clay court season for Djokovic heading into Geneva but two wins have boosted the Serb’s confidence heading into Roland Garros. However, Djokovic will want more this week as he searches for a 100th career title in Switzerland which would be a special landmark in his career.

Norrie will need to be aggressive and proactive on serve as he will use variety to test Djokovic’s knee. Meanwhile Djokovic will look to be aggressive on the backhand side as he will need to rush Norrie’s game and test his patience from the baseline. After a late night, Norrie may not have the energy to fully test Djokovic’s game but a positive performance would give him a boost ahead of Roland Garros.

Prediction: Djokovic in three sets.
