Cameron Norrie def. Joao Sousa [WC] 6-1, 6-3
British No. 2 Cameron Norrie made short shrift of the former home-grown champion Joao Sousa, as he continued his strong run of form since his first outing on clay last week. The first set was a breeze for Norrie who took command of the set with three breaks in a row, despite having had to save a break point in his first service game at the start of the set.
Sousa again had a chance to start the set breaking the Brit, and again Norrie held him at bay, before breaking for another lead. It was a more competitive set from Sousa, who just surrendered the one break, but it was enough to send Norrie into the second round, comfortably.

Preview: Cameron Norrie v Pedro Martinez [Q] | H2H: First Meeting
Next up for Norrie will be Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez, who presents a very different prospect for the Brit.
Tale of the Tape – Key Stats (2021 – Clay)

Tournament Previous Best | R2 (2018) | Q (2019) |
1st Serve % | 68.1 | 67.3 |
Service Games Won % | 84.4 | 78.7 |

2nd Serve Return Points Won % | 49.5 | 51.3 |
Break Points Converted % | 46.9 | 42.1 |
Norrie comes off just a little weaker on taking advantage on second serves, but in all other aspects as you would expect it is once more a match that he is expected to win, ranked 50 places above Martinez.
Playing Styles & Preview
Norrie might actually meet his match in terms of tenacity in the longer rallies against Martinez, who of course has qualifying matches under his belt too.
The Spaniard has a decent serve and will to drive play from the baseline, but if anything will probably sit back a little and hope for Norrie to make mistakes. However, he is up against a metronomically consistent player, who has worked a lot on his already good movement.
Expect Norrie to mix things up a lot, coming in behind his serve and trying to dislodge the Spaniard from his baseline perch.
Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
