This was always going to be a different proposition from the first-round match for the British No. 2 Cameron Norrie. Both started with intent, bringing up break points in the first two games before Norrie made the first move with a break.

However, Pedro Martinez rallied towards the end of the first set, breaking Norrie twice to take a set lead. The second set was a competitive affair, with both fending off a break point apiece before the tie-break. Norrie reeled off seven points on the spin to take the second set.

It was another tight set with Martinez having to save three match points but despite having a couple of chances to turn the tables on the Brits, Martinez fended off two more match points before Norrie got over the line on his sixth try.

The No. 2 seed Cristian Garin has yet to even get underway in Estoril having benefitted from a bye in the first round, and a walkover in the second.

This could be another tight one. Garin has played a lot more clay court tennis this season and won the title in Santiago in the Latin American clay court swing but Norrie has been largely a lot more consistent with just the handful of games he has played on the dirt so far.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Once more Norrie will be facing someone who can go toe-to-toe with him in so many aspects of his own game. Garin’s effectiveness on clay stems from fantastic movement, and the Chilean can run down balls all day long.

Add to that the weight of the ball coming back, with a booming heavy forehand and an equally solid backhand too. His shot placement and construction makes him a very challenging prospect.

Norrie has the stamina to trade blows from the back of the court, and grind him down in rallies, but with one long three-setter in his legs and a quick turn-around, this could be a step too far.

Prediction: Garin in three sets.
